Men's Health Week - 15th to 21st June

Men’s Health Week (15th-21st June) 💙

This week we are helping men learn about free NHS checks that can help keep you healthy. These checks can find problems early and help stop serious illness. Here are some important checks for men:

🫀 AAA screening (age 65)
All men living in England are invited for an AAA scan the year they turn 65. This is a simple scan to check your tummy (aorta). It looks for swelling that could be dangerous if not found early.

🩺 Bowel cancer screening (age 54–74)
You will get a home test kit (called a FIT test) in the post every 2 years. It is quick and easy to do, and it can help find cancer early.
👁️ Diabetic eye screening (if you have diabetes, age 12+)
This checks your eyes for damage. It helps protect your sight. Diabetic eye screening is not part of your normal eye examinations with an optician; you should continue to visit your optician for regular eye examinations as well.

💉 HPV Vaccination (12-13 years)
Boys are offered the HPV vaccine at school in Year 8. HPV is a common virus. Most people get it in their lifetime and it is cleared by the body, but it can sometimes cause cancer. The vaccine helps protect men against some cancers, such as mouth and throat cancer and penile cancer.
Missed it at school? All boys born after 1st September 2009 who missed their vaccination can catch up at their GP practice until their 25th birthday.

💉 General vaccinations
There are a number of vaccinations available for adults, including the seasonal flu vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine and shingles vaccines* for people aged 65 and over and the RSV and seasonal COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 75 years and over.
To find out if you are eligible for any of these vaccines, visit: https://www.nhs.uk/.../nhs-vaccinations-and-when-to-have.../
Some people with underlying health conditions may also be eligible for further vaccinations or vaccinations at an earlier age. Speak to your GP if you are unsure.
*The shingles vaccine is available for all people aged 65 and over if they turned 65 on or after 1 September 2023. Those who turned 65 before 1 September 2023 will only be able to get their shingles vaccine if they are aged between 70 to 79 years old.

All of these checks can help protect you from serious illness.

✨ Why it matters:

Learning Disability Week (15th - 21st June 2026)

💜 Learning Disability Week (15–21 June 2026) 💜

This week we’re supporting Learning Disability Week, led by Mencap. This year’s theme is “Do you see me?” – highlighting the importance of people with a learning disability being seen, heard, included and valued.

At Northlands Surgery, we are committed to providing accessible, inclusive care for all patients.

✅ Under the NHS Accessible Information Standard, we aim to make sure patients:

- Can understand information about their health and care.
- Receive the communication support they need to access services.

✅ How we support our patients:

- We ask about and record your communication needs to ensure you get the most out of our services.
- We can provide information in easy read, large print, or other formats on request.
- We can offer longer appointments or flexible timing if needed.
- We support the use of carers, advocates, or interpreters where appropriate.
- We use reasonable adjustments to make accessing healthcare easier.

If you or someone you care for has a learning disability or communication needs, please let our team know so we can support you. You can contact us by telephone on 01249 812141, by email bswicb.northlandscalne@nhs.net or let us know when you next come in for your appointment.

Diabetes Week (8-14 June)

Let's change how we talk about diabetes.

8 out of 10 people living with diabetes say they’ve faced negative attitudes because of their diabetes - people passing judgement, making sweeping statements, or blaming and shaming people living with diabetes.

This is diabetes stigma. And it causes real harm to millions.

That’s why diabetes.org.uk are on a mission to ‘Strike Out Stigma’.
To show people that nobody chooses diabetes. That it isn’t anyone’s fault. And that by changing the way we talk about diabetes, together we can create a world where diabetes does no harm.

📞 We’re Here to Help - 01249 812141 or visit https://www.northlands-surgery.co.uk/ and click 'submit a request'

Our team can offer advice, support, and checks to help you stay well.

Volunteers' Week

Volunteers’ Week is this week (Mon 1 June – Sun 7 June)

It’s time to celebrate all things volunteering! Join us in thanking all the volunteers across the UK. Find out more at: www.volunteersweek.org

We would like to thank our Patient Participation Group (PPG), who are made up of our patients who generously volunteer their time to get involved in decisions about the range and quality of services provided by the surgery. Not only do they attend our quarterly PPG meetings, but they also volunteer to support our Covid and Flu campaigns, as well as events such as our Carers Christmas Party.

If you would like to find out more about the PPG or are interested in joining, please visit our website: https://www.northlands-surgery.co.uk/patient...

Why do reception or administrative staff open letters addressed to doctors?

Our doctors receive a large volume of correspondence each day. To help ensure information is processed safely and efficiently, incoming mail is opened by trained reception and administrative staff on behalf of the clinical team.

This allows important documents to be:

  • directed to the correct clinician,
  • scanned onto the medical record where appropriate,
  • and dealt with promptly.

All members of the practice team, including administrative staff, are bound by strict confidentiality rules and data protection requirements.

If you wish to discuss something privately with a doctor, the most appropriate way to do this is usually by booking an appointment rather than sending a letter marked “Private and Confidential”.

Information for patients on availability of new weight-loss treatment

Information for patients on availability of new weight-loss treatment

From Monday 23 June, a new weight loss drug called tirzepatide, sometimes referred to as Mounjaro®, will start becoming available for use in primary care settings.

In line with NHS England guidance, this treatment will only be available for patients whose body mass index is above 40 and have been diagnosed with four or more obesity-related health conditions*.

Patients are advised that prescriptions will not be provided immediately, and that 23 June is the date from which GPs may wish to begin a discussion with eligible patients about using tirzepatide as part of their overall weight-loss journey.

Access will be prioritised for those with the greatest clinical need, as the treatment is intended to support people living with health conditions caused or made worse by obesity.

Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board is currently working with colleagues in primary care to ensure this new treatment is offered to those patients who fulfil this criteria.

At this time, patients are kindly asked not to contact their GP practice with requests for weight loss treatment.

All patients, including those who may be eligible for the new drug, are continued to be encouraged to access NHS-supported healthy living initiatives, such as diet support and activity groups, as part of their overall weight loss journey.

*To be eligible for tirzepatide, patients need to have a body mass index (BMI) above 40 and have been diagnosed with four or more of the following conditions:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Dyslipidaemia

Parking at Northlands

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Parking at Northlands Surgery from Tuesday 18th June 2024

The practice's patients who have appointments are struggling to park in the surgery car park due to others using the car park for their needs.

To improve availability of parking spaces for the practice patients we have taken the decision to install a car park security system.

When you attend the surgery, please ensure your car registration details are entered into the display pad as you enter reception.

Pharmacy customers will use the display pad in the pharmacy.

Please enter your car registration details every time you attend the surgery, even if the car you are travelling in is not yours.

As this system is being operated by Creative Car Parks any appeals should be made directly to them as detailed on the documentation sent out by them (www.ce-service.co.uk). The surgery is NOT responsible for any tickets issued and does not make any revenue from this change.

Repeat Prescription Requests

Repeat Prescription Requests:

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are online:

SystmOnline, to set up an account, please bring a form of ID to the surgery.

Patients can also use the repeat slip (right hand side of green prescription) – ticking the items needed and handing this slip into the practice box in reception or posting it to the practice.

We do not take repeat prescription requests over the telephone. The most important reason is safety. Some telephone requests can result in misunderstandings or mistakes. We want to minimise the risk of a potential error causing a significant event.

Please allow 7 days for repeat prescriptions to be processed.

Regards
The Northlands Team
